Tips to Stress Free Moving With Your Cats
Updated: Feb 8, 2021
Cats are easily stressed by changes in their environment, moving is an especially difficult time. Here are some ideas to make moving less stressful for your cat.
👉🏻 Boarding
If you are doing repairs before you move or have a large house with many movers coming in and out, you may want to consider boarding your cat. If your cat has stayed before with a friend or family your cat may be less stressed there. This would not be a good time to try somewhere new.
👉🏻 Streamline
Make less fuss while moving. Organize the packing so it doesn’t go on for days and try to move in as short of a time.
👉🏻 Save Cats’ Things for Last
Keep out some of your cat’s stuff until the later, so your cat still feels at home. Their cat tree and beds are good things to keep around, to make it easy for your cat to hide if they feel like hiding.
👉🏻 Pheromones
Put a plug-in pheromone product in your home, to help keep kitty calm during the moving process. Also, you can put a thundershirt on your kitty.
👉🏻 Keep Your Cat in a Quiet Room
Pick a room (bathroom is a good choice) that you can completely clear out and put your cat along with water, food, litterbox, toys, and the plug-in pheromone – while you move everything out of the house.
👉🏻 Keep Safe Room Door Locked
Movers don’t know or can forget you have a cat in that room, lock the door and put a sign up so your cat does not run out.
👉🏻 Move Cat Last
Move everything out of house to the new place, before bringing your cat. If you are moving far, put kitty in the car last when you are ready to leave.
👉🏻 Safe Room Again
When at the new place, set-up cat first in another quiet room with all their stuff, then move everything else. Also, plug-in pheromones throughout the new house, to help keep cat be more at ease when you let them out. Unpack before you let your cat out in the rest of the house. Familiar stuff and smells will make it easier for your cat to adjust.
👉🏻 If Your Cat Hides
If your cat is hiding, let them hide. Close the room, make sure he has food, water, toys, cat tree, bed, and litterbox. Let them be until they decide to come out and socialize.
👉🏻 If Your Cat Won’t Eat
If your cat stopped eating because of moving stress, try tempting them with special treats that increase appetite. Take them to a vet if your cat doesn’t eat for a few days.
